Versatile, powerful, and easy to incorporate in formulations, there is a broad spectrum of advantages to using the oil, but what makes it such a great overall choice? The answer lies in the many benefits of this ancient oil.

The history of Rosehip Oil

The oil has a long and storied history of use in personal care product applications. Rosehip is often confused with Rose Oil, which is extracted from the flower of the rose plant. By contrast, authentic Rosehip Oil comes from pressing the seeds of wild rose shrub. Cold-pressing ensures that as much of the oil’s natural nutrients and qualities remain intact as possible.

Some of the earliest known recorded uses are by the Ancient Egyptians and Mayans, who used a wide variety of plant-based oils, including Rosehip Oil, as a topical skin treatment. Furthermore, there is evidence that Rosehip Oil was also used in other cultures, such as Ancient Chinese, Roman and Native American. The plant’s Latin name, Rosa Canina, is believed to originate from the Roman idea that it could cure the bite of rabid dogs.

During the latter part of the 20th century, personal care brands began to take a much closer look at the nutritional profile of the oil and its potential within skin formulations, building in global momentum.

Why is Rosehip Oil proving such a hit?

Rosehip Oil, sometimes known as Rosehip Seed Oil, has become one of the most sought-after ingredients available to personal care product developers. It’s versatile, protective and has a light, earthy aroma.

The oil has a unique and useful combination of nutrients, including linoleic and alpha linolenic fatty acids. These mark Rosehip Oil out as an excellent choice for moisturising and hydrating skin care applications, leaving skin feeling healthy, refreshed and hydrated.

Rosehip Oil is naturally rich in vitamins A, which suggest it could have mild anti-inflammatory and skin healing properties, and its abundant nutrients help to boost the production of collagen, which supports skin elasticity and firmness. Rosehip Oil can be used in formulations that treat pigmentation or signs of ageing, as well as hydrating dry skin. The oil helps skin remain nourished, supple, and even in tone and is often found in products aimed at reducing the appearance of scarring, fine lines, wrinkles and stretching.

Depending on the grade, Rosehip Oil varies from a rich orange colour to very light yellow. It is non-greasy and extremely light, allowing it to absorb easily into the skin.
