Background

Discover the benefits of Coconut Oil! Coconut is mainly grown in tropical areas, especially Africa and South East Asia. The seed within the coconut consists of ‘milk’ and a solid called the copra, which contains about 65% lipids. The oil can be obtained by cold pressing the flesh found inside the shell of the coconut; however other methods such as solvent extraction are sometimes used.

Benefits

The oil itself has a distinctive, recognisable aroma and is stable when exposed to air. However, the oil has a low viscosity and solidifies at 0 degrees.

Commonly used as cooking oil, Coconut Oil contains predominantly medium chain triglycerides, with roughly 92% saturated fatty acids, 6% monounsaturated fatty acids, and 2% polyunsaturated fatty acids. Of the saturated fatty acids, Coconut Oil is primarily 44.6% lauric acid, 16.8% myristic acid, 8.2% palmitic acid and 8% caprylic acid, although it contains seven different saturated fatty acids in total.
